It’s BadWill here with team ABU, and today It’s Modern Wednesday!! My favorite Modern deck is Counters Company! The deck’s main plan is to kill your opponent as fast as turn 3 with Devoted Druid, Vizier of Remedies and a Duskwatch Recruiter, Walking Ballista, or Rhonas the Indomitable.
The combo here is Devoted Druid’s ability to untap it by putting a -1/-1 counter on it, so if you have a Vizier of Remedies you can untap the Druid as many times as you want and it won’t die since the Vizier reads, “If one or more -1/-1 counters would be put on a creature you control, that many -1/-1 counters minus one are put in it instead” giving you a large number of green mana, with that you can use it to cast the Ballista for a lot more than lethal or Rhonas to pump up the Druid and any other mana dorks you may have.
The deck runs tons of ways to find the combo including 4x Collected Company, 4x Chord of Calling, and lastly 2x Duskwatch Recruiter. The second combo in the deck is Vizier of Remedies, Kitchen Finks, and Viscera Seer. The way it works is you sack the Kitchen Finks to scry with Viscera Seer, so it’ll go to the graveyard and if it didn’t have the -1/-1 counter on it persist will trigger and bring it back to the battlefield gaining you 2 life and getting the -1/-1 counter.
Now if Vizier is on the battlefield, it’ll come back without the counter meaning you can do it again and again and again. You could do it till you have 1 billion life (if you were at an odd life total 1 billion and 1). So 1 billion life is excellent and all, but you also get to scry your entire deck you don’t really get to change the order, but you do get to cut it to whatever card you want. Another thing to remember some decks don’t care about your life total, for example, Tron can mill you with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger or just restart the game with an ultimate from Karn Liberated. Or 10 poison counters will kill you no matter how much life you have, infect isn’t too popular in our current meta (Sorry Joe!) but affinity is, and one attack from Inkmoth Nexus could infect you for 10 – killing you.
The only other real win con that I can think of to deal with a billion life would be Jace, the Mind Sculptor with his ultimate exiling my deck, making my hand the new deck, and milling me out. The rest of the deck is just to help me ramp and pack plenty of value creatures to help me win! Having access to instant speed creature interactions is pretty good and I’m sure everyone knows how good collected company is. Here’s the list! Oh yeah, before I forget With the release of Guilds of Ravnica the only real change I can see is the Reclamation Sage out for the Knight of Autumn.
